Handmade Christmas 2017 using Concord & 9th, Ink Blending and Heat Embossing

 For the entire series this year, I wanted to challenge myself to create all new designs with stamps and dies that I already owned.  I didn't buy a single new release.  Not because there weren't any that I liked; there were plenty of lovely designs available.  It was because I needed to reign in superfluous spending and there's a lot of folks who simply can't go buy all the pretty new things.  So I made due.  And it was fun!  I discovered how many stamp sets I have bought but never used and how versatile non-Christmas sets can be.  The Cozy Up set by Concord & 9th is a Valentines set, so why not make a Christmas card with a romantic vibe?  I ended up putting both cards in one video because the footage gremlins stole enough footage so that I couldn't make 2 videos and they are quite similar, so it fit together anyway.  Here's the link to the video on my YouTube channel and the supply list is below.

Handmade Christmas 2017: Scraps and Die Cuts

 As you may have noticed, there's no stamping in todays cards.  It's all scrap papers and die cuts so we not only use up otherwise unusable excess, but also give ourselves a creative stretch.  I have all sorts of different papers in these cards; glitter, foil, patterned paper, wood veneer, velvet and shimmer.  To add interest and flair, mix up your finishes.  Varying the textures also gives depth and dimension to the finished product.  You also want to pay attention to widths.  Place wide pieces next to skinny pieces so that you draw the eye and add interest.  You can make these any size too.  I went with the standard 4.25" x 5.5", but the size is only limited by the length of your scraps.  This technique also works for absolutely any occasion and it's perfect for guy cards.  I have strips as thin as 1/8" and as wide as 3/4".  I used my paper trimmer to cut strips down and trim off any torn or crooked edges.  Here is the link to the video tutorial on my YouTube channel and my supplies are listed below.

Hooty Whoo Owls with Copics and Newtons Nook

 I have loved owls since I was a little girl and would fall asleep listening to them in the pine trees.  They were secretive, elusive and majestic and every time I would catch a glimpse of one I felt such awe.  That was the inspiration behind this card.  I wanted to keep the focus on the birds, so I kept the rest of the card fairly simple with some simple ink blending over a stencil.  I used Copic markers to color my images and you'll notice that it doesn't disturb the dye ink in the ink blending; alcohol ink works well with dye ink because they won't dissolve each other so their compatible and safe to use together.  If you are having trouble figuring out how to color an image and want to be true to life, just google whatever it is and you'll have tons of reference photos to go on.

Mixed Media Watercolor Frame with Infinity Engravings LLC

 Have I got a fun project for you!  With this project, I was making it for my 3 year old niece, so the design I had in mind was colorful, outdoorsy and exciting.  A few months back I saw a project using watercolor grounds and was very interested in what it was and what you could do with it.  It's a medium that allows you to turn surfaces such as metal, glass and chipboard into a surface that accepts watercolors.  I typically use acrylic paints in my mixed media projects, but am a much strong watercolor artist than acrylic artist so the watercolor grounds opened up a whole new avenue for me. 

 I applied 2 coats of watercolor grounds to the frame and to the fairy and letter die cuts.  I ended up using acrylic paint on the letters because the watercolor just wasn't standing out enough. 

 I painted both butterflies with acrylic paints as well and topped the smaller butterfly with glitter.

 I didn't care for how the bodies of the fairies turned out, so I painted over them with white acrylic paint and added glitter.

DT Post: Mixed Media Love Box with Infinity Engraving LLC

 Today's project was inspired by the lovebird chipboard die cut from Infinity Engraving LLC and my sisters favorite color, red.  I really enjoyed the process of designing and creating this project and absolutely adore how it turned out.  I wanted a blend between shabby-chic and harlequin romance, so I added a variety of textures and finishes to go along with the sections of stenciling.

DT Post: Faith based Spring Mixed Media with Infinity Engraving LLC

 It has been a minute since I've done a mixed media canvas and I missed it!  I love card-making but being creative on larger scale has it's own appeal.  I like doing irregular or unexpected shapes with my pieces because for me, it inspires creativity.  I love texture, color and purpose in my work.  With so much unrest and animosity in the world today, I wanted to project of the some love, peace and hope that I find through my faith in Christ into it.  That is the purpose behind todays piece.

I started with a 10" circle board.  These come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are made of layered chipboard.  I bought mine at Hobby Lobby.  After adding three coats of white Gesso (acrylic medium), I covered my board with Tim Holtz "Melange" Tissue Wrap using Prima Soft Matte Gel, smoothing over the surface and wrapping around to the back.  After that was dry, I went in with acrylic paint.  I laid down a coat of clear Gesso to make the paint go on a little thinner so that you could see the print of the tissue paper and to make blending easier.  I used pink and green, which are complementary colors.  Complementary colors means that if you mix them together, they make brown.  So where they met on the canvas, I was careful not to blend them too much.

 

 After the paint was dry, I applied the vellum centerpiece.  I created the wording on my computer in Word and printed it on vellum.  To make a sticker out if it, I applied Stick-It sheet adhesive to the back so that the adhesive wouldn't be visible through the vellum and used a square die to die cut it.  You could also use a paper trimmer.  My chipboard die cuts and wood heart buttons are from Infinity Engraving LLC.  I wanted the wood appearance and texture to show and just used the buttons as is.  I used spray inks to color the rose and vine die cut as well as the corner trellis.  I let those dry while I added my stenciling. 

If you want to use water-based mediums on chipboard do not prime with Gesso.  Gesso is an acrylic base medium that makes whatever it's put on non-porous.  If you want to use water-based mediums, but want a white base, use watercolor grounds instead of Gesso. 

 I used E6000, which is an industrial strength glue specific to metal, to attach my metal embellishments.  It's really the only glue I've found that holds metal; the other mediums I've tried don't hold very long, including hot glue.  The only thing to be mindful of when using E6000 is that it has a strong chemical odor and needs to be used with ventilation.  I live in Michigan and open my windows, even in winter, when using it. 

 To adhere the rest of my embellishments, I use the same Prima Soft Matte Gel that I adhered the tissue paper with.  It dries matte and clear, so you can't see it if it oozes out anywhere and holds perfectly.  All the button, seed beads and flat-back pearls are from 28 Lilac Lane Button mixes and embellishment kits.  I pour them out into a little dish and use them to fill in and around to complete the project.  With the varied sizes and finishes of all the elements, it makes it really easy to shape a cohesive look while maintaining the focus on the center.  To finish off, I added a few enamel dots here and there.

Engraved Embossed Snowflake Ornament Tag with Infinity Engraving LLC

 Hello and Merry Christmas!  Todays project is a fun, easy and versatile tag that can be as elaborate or as simple as you want it to be.  It's also completely customize-able!  Change up the colors and stamps and you'd have something totally different.  So have fun experimenting and trying things out. 

I started with a Manilla tag and did some ink dipping, drying thoroughly between each layer.  If there is any moisture left in the tag, the stamping will blur out and you will lose the crisp edges. After that, I added the sheet music stamp in random spots and let that dry.  If the sheet music isn't dry, the white embossing powder will stick to it and you'll lose the intricacy of the snowflake stamp.  Then, I heat embossed the snowflake swirls using white pigment ink and glittery white embossing powder.  After that was heat set, I added more blue around the edges with an ink blending tool. 

Next is the die cut chipboard snowflake.  Cover the die cut with embossing ink and cover with embossing powder.  Tap off the excess and heat set.  Repeat this process, adding another layer of embossing powder.  Using the same sheet music stamp we used earlier, ink it up with embossing ink and have it standing by.  Add another layer of embossing powder and as soon as it's completely melted, stamp the sheet music stamp into it and lift off.  Add the die cut snowflake and die cut sentiment to the tag using liquid glue and the tag is complete.  Here is the link to the video tutorial on my YouTube channel if you'd like to see the process from start to finish and my supply list is below.

Handmade Christmas Card Series #1: Let's Mix It Up

 Welcome to Day 1 of my Handmade Christmas card series.  I wanted to play around with colors, textures and imagery, creating something beautiful yet not quite traditional and I really like how this one turned out.  I paired the traditional red and gold with gray and used a non-traditional floral image with the traditional sweater pattern in the stencil to give a breath of fresh air to a Christmas card.  I want to encourage you to try something like this with whatever stencils and stamps you have in your collection to put your own spin on your Christmas cards.  After all, there really are no rules to say what you can and can't do.  If you hate it, it's only paper and you can try again.  Here's the video tutorial on my YouTube channel if you want to see how I created this card start to finish and my supply list is below.

Spooky Cooky Halloween Hop with My Inky Oasis (facebook group)

Personalized Collage Canvas with Infinity Engravings LLC

Hello and Welcome back!  Todays project is a mixed media canvas utilizing chipboard letters and bright colors to create a fun, bright and exciting piece of art.  Here is the link to the video on my YouTube channel where I filmed the tutorial from start to finish.  I had my nephew in mind when creating this piece, so I used his favorite colors and embellishments that would resonate with him, such as feathers because he loves birds and nature and an anchor because he loves going boating and the water.
