Beach Day Slider

I'm squeezing this fun and sunny slider card in at the tail end of summer because I can!  And to be honest, this summer went by so stinking fast, so lets get started.  We have Copic coloring, ink blending, heat embossing and a slider feature.  If you're new to card-making, a project like this can seem daunting and complicated.  However, like most things, when you break it down into individual steps, it's simple and straight forward.  The sand, wave and sky are simple ink blending.  The sand and wave are die cut.  The wave is heat embossed with glossy clear embossing powder.  The critters, sun and castle are stamped, colored and die cut.  I stamped two of the hippo with the second to color and fussy cut just the watermelon and hand section to pop it up on the finished card.  Now we have all of our components. 
Die cut the slider channel from the wave piece and build the support on the back with foam tape.  Lay the wave and sand over the sky so that the wave peeks up behind the sand while the slider channel remains hidden.   Attach slider discs to the back of the elephants feet and place him in the slider channel.  Insert the elephant and move him back and forth to see how he looks and if you like the placement.  Stamp and heat emboss the sentiment at the top left corner of the sky.  Add foam tape to the back of the sand so that it doesn't interfere with the slider mechanism.  Adhere each critter, sun and castle and the card is complete.

Easter Triple Play

Todays post and video are done in a bit of a different style than usual.  I have 3 cards, all of an Easter theme celebrating the resurrection of our Lord Jesus, utilizing experiments.  When I get new products, I like to play with them and experiment so I have a bin in my studio with several random bits.  These cards were created using a few of those panels.  I chose to do it this way because Easter has devolved into chicks, bunnies, toys and candy.  I wanted to convey it's true purpose and true meaning and I hope you enjoy.

Start with a Bristol Smooth panel cut to 4"x 5.25" and tape the stencil down on the corners.  Smooth the lavender Nuvo paste over the top half and the green over the bottom half, blending the two colors in the middle.  Remove stencil while paste is still wet.  Set aside the panel to dry and immediately wash the stencil and palette knife.  The panel will take an hour or so to dry completely, but I let mine sit for several hours.  Once dry, center the cross die in the middle of the panel so that the pattern is even in the die and run it through your die cutting machine.  Give it a few passes; you may have to use your craft knife to help complete the cuts in a few places.  Cut the gold cardstock to 4.25" x 5.5" and adhere to the card base using Scor-tape.  Center the glitter paste panel and center it over the gold.  Apply Stick-It to the back of some gold cardstock and run the Oh Happy Day die with the gold cardstock through the die cutting machine.  Remove the die cut from the rest and remove all the little bits and pieces.  Arrange the die cuts over the glitter panel, remove backing paper and press down.  I started with Day because it was at the bottom and wanted to make sure it didn't hang off the edge of the glitter panel.  The card is complete.

In order listed above, I used the ink blending technique to add color to my panel.  Next, I applied the glimmer paste using the stencil and let that dry.  Once the paste was dry, I ran in through my die cut machine with the largest of the MFT Wonky Stitches dies.  Using vellum with Stick-It on the back, I stamped and heat embossed my images followed by die cutting them.  To finish up, I adhered the colored panel to the cardbase with Scor-Tape and layered the vellum images on the front.  Card completed.

Hooty Whoo Owls with Copics and Newtons Nook

 I have loved owls since I was a little girl and would fall asleep listening to them in the pine trees.  They were secretive, elusive and majestic and every time I would catch a glimpse of one I felt such awe.  That was the inspiration behind this card.  I wanted to keep the focus on the birds, so I kept the rest of the card fairly simple with some simple ink blending over a stencil.  I used Copic markers to color my images and you'll notice that it doesn't disturb the dye ink in the ink blending; alcohol ink works well with dye ink because they won't dissolve each other so their compatible and safe to use together.  If you are having trouble figuring out how to color an image and want to be true to life, just google whatever it is and you'll have tons of reference photos to go on.

Blessed Butterfly with Distress Oxides, Nuvo and Concord & 9th

 Bonjour! I just saw the new Beauty and the Beast movie and the opening song has been on repeat in my head and I'm not complaining.  I have always LOVED the animated version and couldn't wait to see the live action, which absolutely did not disappoint.  Anyway, we're here for a card, so let's get started.  Frankly, this project started out as an experiment with the Nuvo embellishment mousse.  I liked what I had, so, when in doubt, add ink!  My new Oxides were sitting on my desk along with the Concord & 9th sets and this card was born.  I was excited to see how the Oxides would work with heat embossing and they're beautiful.  I positively loved the background and didn't want to cover it up, so I went with Vellum for the butterfly and an open and airy sentiment. 

 I wish you could see how beautifully the glitter embossing shines on this butterfly.  Pictures just don't do it justice.  A few sequins add the perfect finishing touch.  Here is the link to the video tutorial on my YouTube channel of you'd like to recreate this card at home.  My supply list is below.

Masculine Ink Dipped Design with Distess Oxide Inks

 If you've played with the regular Distress inks before, you're probably familiar with the ink-dipping technique.  I used that technique with this card, but as you can see, the results are a little different; the layers stand out more, no muddying of the colors, and the colors are just as vibrant.  Distress Oxides are a hybrid between dye ink and pigment ink.  They have opacity and dry to a chalk-like finish because of the pigment ink with vibrancy and reactivity to water that we're familiar with in the original Distress because of the dye ink.  I had a lot of fun playing and creating with them and I think you will too!

This one is a very simple masculine design with 1 stamp, ink blending and 2 die cuts.  It's perfect for all the dudes in our lives that don't want a lot of fuss.  Starting with a panel of Bristol Smooth cardstock I did the ink blending first.  Using my MISTI, I stamped the barnwood stamp in SSS Dark Chocolate ink and ran it through my Big Shot with a MFT Wonky Stitches die to give it a finished edge.  I added Stick-It to the back of a scrap of black velvet cardstock and a scrap of wood veneer paper to die cut a banner and the hello sentiment.  My cardbase is W+9 Oatmeal cardstock.  I adhered my panel down to the cardbase with Scor-tape, layered the sentiment over the banner and was finished.  My supply list is below!

Tweet Me A Song

Happy Spring!  Today's card was inspired by the birds I heard chirping at the bird feeder, a sound I've loved since I was little.  I used a holiday set by Altenew called Winter Cardinal and by changing the colors from reds to blues, I created a Blue Jay instead of a Cardinal.  You could use yellows to create a Cedar Waxwing.  Let's get started.

Step 1)  Using the largest two Stitched Rectangle dies, cut two panels of Oatmeal cardstock.  Using the MISTI, start the stamping with the branch in Dark Chocolate ink.  Next, stamp the feet using Slate ink.  Now for the body of the bird.  This is a layering stamp set, and it's easy to know which to stamp first.  The first layer to stamp is the body in Momento Bahama Bay ink.  The second layer is in Lawn Fawn's Fish Tank ink.  The third layer is in Momento Danube Blue and the fourth and final layer is in Lawn Fawn Deep Sea.  If you get any spotty stamping, just reink and stamp again (this is where the MISTI comes in handy). 

Step 2)  Using an ink blending tool, add Squeezed Lemonade over the top right corner of each panel and Tumbled Glass around the rest of the panel.  Add Blueprint Sketch around the Tumbled Glass, just along the edges for some depth. 

Step 3)  Add scor-tape to the back side of the larger inked panel and adhere to a card base.  Cut a piece of fun foam slightly smaller than the bird panel and add scor-tape to both sides.  Remove backing paper from one side and adhere to the back side of the bird panel. Remove backing tape and centering the bird panel, adhere to the larger inked panel. 

Step 4)  Cut branch from wood veneer paper using the branch die.  Adhere over the stamped branch using liquid glue.  Pull out three gold sequins of varying sizes and two blue sequins of different size.  Adhere with liquid glue in the top left corner.  Our card is complete!

Woodsy Yet Elegant Wedding Card with Infinity Engravings

Hi there! Today's project is a wedding or anniversary card.  I discovered a new stamp company recently, Concord & 9th, and I just love their stuff.  I also had a die cut from Infinity Engravings sitting on my desk.  The die cut was laying on the stamp set and it came to me.  This card is fairly simple (at least for me) in that it's basic stamping and layering.  The most time-consuming part of this card is the sequins on the dress, but I just love how it looks.  Here's how I did it.

Paint the girl with Spun Sugar and the guy with Hickory Smoke.  I did two layers, making sure the first one is dry before adding the second.  I let it dry for 15 minutes.
I used the third largest rectangle die for the wood paper and the second largest die for the pink glitter paper.  I cut the foiled vellum to 4.25" by 5.5" to fit the card base.
Using the MISTI, I started with the tree bark stamp on the left and stamped it in Archival black.  I stamped it twice to make the black really solid.  The wood paper is actual wood veneer and quite absorbent.  It die cuts and stamps beautifully.  Next, I stamped the heart twice, followed by the Mr&Mrs and finished with the same tree bark stamp, but turned around.

After the second coat of paint on the die cut is dry, coat it with VersaMark ink and heat emboss with clear embossing powder to give it a shiny finish.

Adhere the foiled vellum to the card base with 1/2" Scor-tape.  Adhere pink layer and wood layer, centering each layer.
Attach sequins to die cut using matte medium.  I scoop a little glob onto my work surface and dip each sequin in, then place on my project.  I laid all the sequins out on the skirt and then adhered them, but in hindsight, it really wasn't necessary.  Set aside to dry for at least an hour.  Once dry, add foam squares to the back, peel off the backing and attach to the card front.  Our masterpiece is complete!

Laura's Loft Challenge - RESIST

Resist is the technique for Laura's Loft January Challenge.  It's not only one of my favorites, it's also one of the first techniques I've ever learned.  This tag was made for my youngest niece.  At 15 months, she's a bit young to appreciate it, but oh well.  Her mom loves it and I had a lot of fun with it.  Challenge entry details, dates and prize info will be at the bottom of this post.

I started with stamping the flowers and leaves in Wild Rose, then Cranberry over it, layering the images.  I was careful not to allow it to get busy or crowded.  I set it aside to dry for a few hours to avoid the embossing powder sticking where it wasn't supposed to.

Now it was time for stamping my embossed images.  I started with the borders. I stamped them in VersaMark, added embossing powder, tapped off excess and heat to set.  I stamped and powdered each image individually so that I could see where each image was to avoid overlapping my images.

*Heat Embossing tip:  When heating embossing powder, let your heat gun run for 60 to 90 seconds before applying heat to your project.  This will allow your gun to get good and hot so that when applied, the powder starts to melt almost immediately; this will give you smoother embossing and you can avoid blowing off powder and/or overheating it.  Watch closely when heating; you'll see it change from powdery to shiny.  When it's shiny, it's done.

Time for my favorite part, ink blending!  When considering what colors I wanted to use, I had to remember not to overpower the stamped images I started with ( Rose and Cranberry).  With that in mind, I began with Spun Sugar and blended it over the entire tag.  I followed it with Wild Rose, blending it in from the edges towards the middle.  It was turning too red, so I added Picked Raspberry to give it more of a pink tone.  Finishing with Wilted Violet over the top right and bottom left edges made it perfect; it added depth, made the embossing stand out even more and added just a bit of sophistication.

I stamped the elephant from the Wplus9 set on Spectrum Noir cardstock and colored him with Spectrum Noir markers.  I fussy cut him out and adhered him with foam squares.  To finish up, I die cut the letters out of dark blue foiled cardstock and adhered them with foam squares.  I just love how this tag turned out!

2015 Christmas project series Day 3 Serene Scene

Welcome to Day 3 of the 2015 Christmas project series.  I have really been into non-traditional colors for Christmas this year and I LOVE this one.  The natural imagery is simple, yet impactful and the soft colors add a bit of whimsy. The background is a piece of Distress Watercolor Cardstock, which comes cut to 4.25x5.5 inches, a standard A2 size card.  I used Distress Spray Stain in Picked Raspberry, Shaded Lilac and Cracked Pistachio, then spritzed with water to blend.  This link goes to a blog post for the technique.

The stamp set I used is Winter Wonderland by Wplus9 and the ink is Momento Tuxedo Black.  When working with watercolor paper, it's important to consider what you want to do with it.  Distress cardstock has a textured side and a smoother side.  Stamping on the textured side can be challenging, especially when using solid area images.  What was fortunate (for me) about this set is that I could color in any blank spots in the deer and bunny with a black marker and the trees are designed in such a way that missing spots aren't noticeable when stamped.  I used a Faber Castell PITT marker size B (bold; it has a brush tip).  I stamped the deer first, then made a mask from Inkadinkadoo Masking Paper.  I applied the mask, stamped the bunny, and finished with the trees.  When you remove the mask, you see that the deer is in front of the tree.

The next step is the snow, created by using the Falling Snow Stencil by Simon Says Stamp, Texture Paste by Teresa Collins, Cool Highlight superfine glitter by Glitter Ritz, and a palette knife.  I like to adhere the base to my work surface using tape runner.  Start by scooping about a teaspoon of paste onto your work surface.  Add some glitter to the paste and mix together using the palette knife.  Tape the stencil down over the watercolor piece with low-tack tape; I'm using blue painters tape from 3M.

Smooth the glittered paste evenly over the stencil.  Carefully peel off the tape and remove the stencil by carefully pulling up from the bottom.  Lift the piece off the work surface and set aside to dry.  It should take about an hour or so to dry.  Do not be tempted to use a heat tool.  It will essentially cook the paste, making it bubble up and distort the shape.  I've even seen it turn brown.  Let it air dry.

To add snow to the bottom edge, I used two products.  I did one layer of the same texture paste (without the glitter), but wasn't satisfied with it because it dried translucent in areas, rather than opaque.  I added a layer of Aleene's Glitter Snow. 

I like to leave it uneven, like you would see it outside after one of our famous Michigan blizzards.  I didn't add a sentiment because I didn't think it needed one.  And leaving it without a sentiment makes it flexible.  It's suitable for a birthday, Christmas, sympathy or thinking of you. 

To finish it off, I mounted it on a Neenah Solar White 110 lb card base, cut 4.25 by 11 inches and scored at 5.5 inches.  I added half inch Scor-tape along all four edges and the card is complete.
