Zig Butterfly Flight with Scrapbooking with M.E. Boutique

 Hello!  Todays project is the first of three Design Team projects for Scrapbooking with M.E. Boutique and I'm so excited to be working with them.  I've stamped and masked my butterflies starting with the pink butterfly and ending with the yellow one, using Altenews Bejeweled stamp set.  I stamped the butterflies using Archival ink because it's waterproof and wont run or smear when any water based medium is applied.  Canson XL 140lb watercolor paper was the surface is chose to work on.  Zig Clean Color markers are a brush tipped water-based marker that you can use with water to create a lovely variety of watercolor effects, without having to go into actual watercolors and using them with watercolor paper gives perfect results because the paper is designed to accept a lot of water without pilling or warping.  You can use these markers with Bristol Smooth cardstock, but I don't suggest using much water with it.

DT Post: Mixed Media Love Box with Infinity Engraving LLC

 Today's project was inspired by the lovebird chipboard die cut from Infinity Engraving LLC and my sisters favorite color, red.  I really enjoyed the process of designing and creating this project and absolutely adore how it turned out.  I wanted a blend between shabby-chic and harlequin romance, so I added a variety of textures and finishes to go along with the sections of stenciling.

DT Post: Faith based Spring Mixed Media with Infinity Engraving LLC

 It has been a minute since I've done a mixed media canvas and I missed it!  I love card-making but being creative on larger scale has it's own appeal.  I like doing irregular or unexpected shapes with my pieces because for me, it inspires creativity.  I love texture, color and purpose in my work.  With so much unrest and animosity in the world today, I wanted to project of the some love, peace and hope that I find through my faith in Christ into it.  That is the purpose behind todays piece.

I started with a 10" circle board.  These come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are made of layered chipboard.  I bought mine at Hobby Lobby.  After adding three coats of white Gesso (acrylic medium), I covered my board with Tim Holtz "Melange" Tissue Wrap using Prima Soft Matte Gel, smoothing over the surface and wrapping around to the back.  After that was dry, I went in with acrylic paint.  I laid down a coat of clear Gesso to make the paint go on a little thinner so that you could see the print of the tissue paper and to make blending easier.  I used pink and green, which are complementary colors.  Complementary colors means that if you mix them together, they make brown.  So where they met on the canvas, I was careful not to blend them too much.

 

 After the paint was dry, I applied the vellum centerpiece.  I created the wording on my computer in Word and printed it on vellum.  To make a sticker out if it, I applied Stick-It sheet adhesive to the back so that the adhesive wouldn't be visible through the vellum and used a square die to die cut it.  You could also use a paper trimmer.  My chipboard die cuts and wood heart buttons are from Infinity Engraving LLC.  I wanted the wood appearance and texture to show and just used the buttons as is.  I used spray inks to color the rose and vine die cut as well as the corner trellis.  I let those dry while I added my stenciling. 

If you want to use water-based mediums on chipboard do not prime with Gesso.  Gesso is an acrylic base medium that makes whatever it's put on non-porous.  If you want to use water-based mediums, but want a white base, use watercolor grounds instead of Gesso. 

 I used E6000, which is an industrial strength glue specific to metal, to attach my metal embellishments.  It's really the only glue I've found that holds metal; the other mediums I've tried don't hold very long, including hot glue.  The only thing to be mindful of when using E6000 is that it has a strong chemical odor and needs to be used with ventilation.  I live in Michigan and open my windows, even in winter, when using it. 

 To adhere the rest of my embellishments, I use the same Prima Soft Matte Gel that I adhered the tissue paper with.  It dries matte and clear, so you can't see it if it oozes out anywhere and holds perfectly.  All the button, seed beads and flat-back pearls are from 28 Lilac Lane Button mixes and embellishment kits.  I pour them out into a little dish and use them to fill in and around to complete the project.  With the varied sizes and finishes of all the elements, it makes it really easy to shape a cohesive look while maintaining the focus on the center.  To finish off, I added a few enamel dots here and there.

Versatile, Soft and Easy Watercolor Birthday

Versatile, soft and easy, this card is quick and lovely.  It really is as simple as stamp, paint, let dry, and attach to a cardbase.  Versatile because you can change the sentiment up as you need to; thinking of you, hello, congratulations or sympathy.  Sometimes I leave the front of my cards without a sentiment and write my message on the inside. 
Try not to get caught up with the thought that to create what you see in a video, you have to have what the artist is using.  You don't.  If all you have is your kids Crayola, rock it out!  The point is to create, have fun, relax and play.  If you want to get better, keep practicing.  Monet practiced too.

Personalized Collage Canvas with Infinity Engravings LLC

Mixed Media Faith Canvas with Infinity Engraving

Rose Gold Beauty with Tupelo Designs LLC

Glittered Vellum

This technique is wildly versatile; you can change the die, the colors of glitter, the color foil, the card base color.  It allows you to really get creative with what's in your stash to come up with something beautiful.  You can use other adhesive sheets, but I like the Stick It specifically because it die cuts so nicely, even on both sides of the vellum.  It has become my go to for die cutting.

Embossing Paste Rainbows with Infinity Engraving

Summer is Coming...

Hey guys!  It may be only the second week of May, but I can't wait for the warm temperatures, sunny breezes and days at the lake to get here.  I am enjoying the sounds of spring, the heady scents of Lilacs, Hyacinths and Apple Blossom trees, as well as the welcome colors of Tulips, Daffodils and Crocuses.  Todays project has a summer theme and utilizes chipboard die cuts to add dimension and color.

Obviously, this card was inspired by the ocean versus the lake, but you get the idea.  Relaxing warmth and sunshine!  Lets get started...

Using the technique linked above, I make large 11" by 14" sheets of the background.  In this case, I used blues and turquoise shades.  I cut it down to size to use for backgrounds in my projects.  Starting with a 4.25 by 5.5 inch piece, I ran it through my Big Shot with the largest of the Wonky Stitches frame.  My next step was to lay my stencil over my background, tape it down with washi tape (or any low tack tape) and get ready to add my embossing paste.  I added the glitter to about 1/2 tsp of embossing paste and mixed together.  I smoothed it over the stencil, removed the stencil, set it aside to dry, and washed my stencil and palette knife.  If the paste is allowed to dry on the stencil or knife, it can ruin them.

While my background dried, I colored my chipboard die cuts.  I wanted a purple seahorse, so I started with Crushed Grape Dylusions and added the Mica version as well as the LSG.  Lindy's gives the most incredible shimmer you've ever seen.  For the Conch shell, I tried to go a little more natural, so I started with White Linen Dylusions spray and added Bubblegum Pink Mica; when that was dry, I topped it with Nuvo Clear Crystal Drops to give it a shiny, underwater look.  It did take over an hour for the shell to dry.

While the shell hung out and dried, I continued to build my card.  I wanted to add some depth, so I blended some Blueprint Sketch around the edges; from the halfway point down and along the bottom, without completely covering the white areas.  I was even more careful with the Chipped Sapphire because it's such a dark navy blue.  I added it to the bottom edge and corners.  To further create the ocean feel, I added Prima white sand texture paste along the bottom edge.

 I let the background dry overnight.  The watercolor paper had warped quite a bit, so I cut a piece of fun foam just smaller than the paper.  It's rigid enough to flatten out the panel.  I added scor-tape to both sides of the foam and attached it to the watercolor panel.  Next, I added Mermaid Lagoon to the top half of the cardbase and Blueprint Sketch to the bottom half and attached the foamed panel to the base.  The last thing to do was attach the die cuts, letter stickers and gems.  I used foam squares to attach the die cuts and liquid glue to attach the letter stickers.  The gems completed the card.

Emerald Birdsong Canvas

 

Hey there! Todays project is this stunning canvas.  I was inspired by the changing of seasons and coming of Spring.  One of my favorite sounds is listening to the birds in the morning and using the bird chipboard die cuts from Infinity Engraving, I created my piece.  Here's how it came together!

In the picture to the left is an assortment of products; I used some, but not all.  I started by tearing off a section of tissue wrap and adhering it to the canvas with matte gel medium.  I use a paintbrush to brush a thin, even layer over a quarter to a third of the canvas at a time and smooth the tissue wrap with my fingers or a bone folder.  I also adhere the wrap over the sides of the canvas as well.  It doesn't take long to dry.  My next step was to add the texture medium with a stencil.

I added dabs of Tombow to the back of the stencil and let it dry.  This creates a temporary stick, making sure the stencil doesn't shift when I add my texture paste.  The Imagine Crafts paste will dry to a pearl finish in one light and shift to purple.  It will take around an hour or so to dry; the thicker it's applied, the longer it will take to dry.  While that dried, I completed my birds.

Add fresh glue from the bottle to the pad.  Tap the glue pad over the surface of the die cut, as if you were inking a stamp.  The entire surface of the die cut should be shiny when it's covered.  Let them sit for 20 minutes for the glue to cure. 

After 20 minutes, add the gilding flakes to the die cut and tap to adhere.  You don't need a lot and the flakes are very light.  A lint roller comes in very handy for clean up. 

The black piece is a corner of a Ranger RUBit SCRUBit pad.  Using the scrubby side, rub over the surface of the die cut to remove excess flake and carefully over the edges as well.  Carefully funnel excess flake back into it's jar. 

The top two birds have Royal Peacock gilding flake and the bottom bird with nest has Lancaster Rose.

After my texture paste was completely dry, I added various shades of green gelatos over the tissue paper and blended them with my finger.  In some areas I added a tiny bit of water to my finger to help create a smoother blend and lighter color.  I also added shades of green distress paint in a few areas and Lucky Clover over the outer edges to bring it together.  I used the same matte medium to adhere the bird die cuts to the canvas.  I added a fair amount to the back with a paintbrush to ensure good adhesion and weighted them down until they were dry (I left it overnight).  Next, I wanted to use something new and a little different than what I usually use on my canvases.  Since I usually use metal elements and paper roses, I didn't want to use those here.  Since the die cuts had a metallic finish, I wanted to keep the focus on them. 

So I turned to my new button, beads and sequin mixes by 28 Lilac Lane.  I started by adding larger buttons with matte medium and adding in the smaller buttons, half pearls and sequins to look like leaves and flowers.  In a few other areas, I added medium and pressed beads into it.
