Soft Encouragement Card with Ink Blending and a Stencil

 Hello!!  I know it's been a minute since I've posted a project or video.  Sometimes life gets in the way of art and you have to prioritize.  My husband is in Stage 5 Kidney Failure and is on the transplant list.  As you can imagine, that has taken all of my focus over the past several weeks and I've needed to get back to my studio to restore myself a bit.  Todays project was inspired by two elements in my life; my faith in Jesus and my friends and family that have rallied around my husband and I to support us.  God is amazing. 

The sentiment stamp is from The Ink Road and it's a favorite expression of mine.  I love the size and different fonts Lara used in it's design.  I started by stamping it in the middle of my panel and heat embossing with Rose Gold embossing powder.  Next, I used the Radiating Star stencil by Neat and Tangled off center to the upper left of the sentiment with a pale blue ink by Catherine Pooler Designs.  Side note: if you haven't tried Catherines inks, you are missing out.  They are fantastic and rival any ink I've ever used (including Distress).  I followed the stenciling with a brighter toned blue ink around the edges, keeping it soft.  It still needed something so I looked through all my floral stamps and decided on the Mondo Sakura, which is a Cherry Blossom, by Ellen Hutson and stamped that twice using a medium lilac shade.  To tie everything together and add a bit of shine, I finished it off with some flat-back pearls in Thistle by Little Things.  Those pearls are teeny-tiny and so pretty, so they add just a bit of flair without going overboard.  Perfection.

6 cards with the Brutus Monroe Unicorn Inspiration Box

Lots to talk about today!  If you haven't tried one of Brutus Monroe's Inspiration Boxes, you are missing out!  Brutus Monroe always has images that are different and a bit funky and original.  They're attractive and versatile, making them suitable for both genders.  Masculine cards are something that tend to be difficult, so finding a stamp set and card kit that lend themselves to guy suitable cards is a rare find indeed.  These kits include a stamp set, cardstock, patterned paper, ink, foilable panels (toner printed panels ready to receive foil), and embellishments.  I have lots of leftovers to play with as well.  So lets get to the good stuff; the cards! Brutus Monroe and Arteza Brush Pens Watercolor

 Is that a gorgeous rose or what?  Sometimes it's nice to get a little lost in coloring and the Enchanted Rose from Brutus Monroe is nice and large, so it allows you to take a little time and wander through a rose garden of your own making.  I've always loved coloring because you can do what you want.  Blue horse? Sure, why not?  While this rose may never appear in nature, it's lovely and wonderful and fun.  I had fun trying out the Arteza Brush Pens on this project.  They're a water based ink and are very similar to Zig clean color markers and you can use them interchangeably as well as together, which I did in the lavender rose in the top left corner.  Because there's lots of lovely bright color going on in the rose, I kept the rest of the card simple.  Head over to my youtube channel for the video tutorial and my supplies are listed below.

Gerda Steiner Designs DT Valentine Penguins with Copics and Distress Oxides

 Todays project is the another card I created as a guest designer for Gerda Steiner Designs.  My idea for this one was penguins on the tundra with happy greetings and the penguin holding the balloon fit in perfectly.  The bottom snow panel can be created two ways.  The first is by using white glitter cardstock cut to size freehand or with a die, which is what I did.  The second is to cover piece of white cardstock with Versamark and heat emboss using white glitter embossing powder.  If you're not into glitter, you could just use white cardstock.  The background was made with 3 shades of blue Distress Oxide inks.  If you aren't familiar with them, they are a hybrid of dye and pigment inks, giving them super easy blending and there are several fun techniques you can do with them (but that's another post).  The penguins were stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black ink and colored with Copic markers, then fussy cut.  I don't have the dies yet and these are fairly simple shapes to cut out.  The penguin with the balloon is one image, but I just cut them apart to avoid trying to cut out the string.  Instead, I fussy cut the balloon and penguin and stamped a swirly dash line from another stamp set in my stash for the balloon string.  That allowed me to have more flexibility with placing the penguin and balloon as well as the ability to add dimension by popping it up with foam squares.  I have a video tutorial on my YouTube channel if you'd like to see how this project came together from start to finish and my supplies are listed and linked below.

Handmade Christmas 2017: Scraps and Die Cuts

 As you may have noticed, there's no stamping in todays cards.  It's all scrap papers and die cuts so we not only use up otherwise unusable excess, but also give ourselves a creative stretch.  I have all sorts of different papers in these cards; glitter, foil, patterned paper, wood veneer, velvet and shimmer.  To add interest and flair, mix up your finishes.  Varying the textures also gives depth and dimension to the finished product.  You also want to pay attention to widths.  Place wide pieces next to skinny pieces so that you draw the eye and add interest.  You can make these any size too.  I went with the standard 4.25" x 5.5", but the size is only limited by the length of your scraps.  This technique also works for absolutely any occasion and it's perfect for guy cards.  I have strips as thin as 1/8" and as wide as 3/4".  I used my paper trimmer to cut strips down and trim off any torn or crooked edges.  Here is the link to the video tutorial on my YouTube channel and my supplies are listed below.

Handmade Christmas 2017: Art Impressions Bells Ring with Copics

 Today we have the third card in my Handmade Christmas 2017 card series.  Every time I look at this set and this card, "Shake Your Booty" by KC and the Sunshine band gets in my head.  And how can you not smile and laugh when you see a booty-shaking snowman getting his groove on?  I think we need more of that; more laughter, more silliness and more mirth all around.  Christmas celebrates where we can find ultimate joy- Jesus.  Joy that doesn't fade or end, but lasts forever.

Handmade Christmas 2017: Neat & Tangled Lumberjack Love with Copics

 Hello and welcome to the second card in my Handmade Christmas 2017 card series.  The Neat & Tangled Lumberjack Love set is geared more towards Valentines day than Christmas, but I thought why couldn't it be a Christmas card.  Romance abounds around the holidays, possibly even more so that the rest of the year.  So this card is for lovers and I colored the girl like me and the boy like my husband.  He proposed to me in January and we're coming up on our 10 year wedding anniversary, so he was on my mind while making this card.
I stamped the images first, using the MISTI and Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  When deciding which ink to use, keep this rule in mind: opposites attract.  Copics are alcohol ink markers and need dye ink images because the dye ink doesn't react with alcohol and it wont smudge or bleed.  The industry has made advancements in technology and produced inks that are any medium safe, but I don't have them, so I'll continue to use what I know ;).  The background is alcohol inks and Yupo.  Yupo is actually plastic and will warp easily with heat.  The piece I used did begin to warp as I finished up the embossing.  So be careful with it.  Let your gun run for 30-60 seconds to get hot before applying to your paper so that you're heating for a shorter time span.  Or just use glossy cardstock with your alcohol inks and avoid the issue altogether.  Here is the link to the video tutorial on my YouTube channel and the supplies are listed below.

Handmade Christmas 2017: Penny Black Winter Fairy with Copics

Hello and welcome to the kick off of my Handmade Christmas 2017 series.  Christmas is my favorite time of the year and I'm always looking forward to the creativity that comes with cardmaking.  The only rules are the ones we give ourselves.
I fell in love with the Penny Black Winter Fairy image because she looks so sweet, innocent and darling; it reminded me of childhood Christmases that were magical and lovely.  I imagine that snowball as her gift to baby Jesus; heartfelt and genuine.
The blue and purple version was a practice card, but I absolutely loved how it turned out and decided to include it in the post.  Copic markers are amazing in the right hands and they're a labor of love, but I'm determined to get better with them.  The blue and purple is in the non-traditional color family while the red and gold is certainly in the traditional realm and both are beautiful.

Fantastic Halloween with Copics, Glitter Paste and Alcohol Ink Background

Last, but certainly not least, is my final card in what has turned out to be my Halloween series for 2017.  As much as I loved my Unicorns and pumpkins, this card is my favorite.  It's also the design that required the least thought; it just came together on it's own.  I had the background hanging out in my studio for a while, added glitter paste through a stencil and it fit "purrfectly" with the vampire kitty.  I love it when that happens.  I die cut the background before I added the glitter paste.  You can add it and then die cut (after it's completely dry), but the pressure from the die cutting can distort the shape of the dried paste as well as ruin the dimension.

Magical Halloween Part Deux with Darcies and Copics

Hey guys, welcome back!  As I said yesterday Halloween being my birthday was so much fun as a kid, but is just another day as an adult; for me, it's getting one step closer to Christmas that's the exciting part.  However, when I came across this stamp set with a Unicorn perched upon a jack-o-lantern, I couldn't resist.  The shaker was originally my practice image, but I loved it so much that I fussy cut it out and mounted it to the front of the shaker window.  I just couldn't let it go to waste.  The green glitter card has a Copic colored background because I wanted to keep the focus on the adorable unicorn.  Just a few sequins to finish it off.  This image is perfect for all the Halloween and Unicorn lovers alike.  I'll be sending these to my nieces; they'll love them!

In the video, I used Arches green label watercolor paper, but I think it's too absorbent for the Zig markers, so I listed Canson paper instead.  It's a good quality student-grade paper that works well with the Zig markers and is reasonably priced as well as available at any craft store and online.  Because we're stamping on watercolor paper, which as a bit of a texture to it, you're going to need a MISTI.  I say that because you will need to stamp it several times to get a solid outline and using a MISTI will make that possible.  I've tried re-stamping without it and no matter how sure I was that I was lined up properly, it seldom actually was and I ended up with weird lines.  I am specific to the MISTI because it is a small business and the original inventor of the product.  Other companies have shamefully stolen her design and produced copycats, but I can't support them just because they're cheaper.  Theft is wrong.  Period.

You're My Favorite Shaker with Copic Coloring

Hey guys!  I have the perfect card to transition into fall.  Fall is becoming more and more of a favorite season for me as I love to watch how God paints the trees with greens, reds, golds, and oranges.  I live in Michigan where we have an abundance of squirrels and those little balls of energy are what inspired my card for today.  I think masculine cards are the one area card makers struggle with most and this design has a lean in that direction.  The background is a toner sheet that I ran through my laminator with gold foil and ink dipped with original Distress inks.  You want to be careful with adding wet mediums because the paper isn't designed to hold up to a lot.  Here is the link to the video tutorial on my YouTube channel and all my supplies are listed below.

I'm squeezing this fun and sunny slider card in at the tail end of summer because I can!  And to be honest, this summer went by so stinking fast, so lets get started.  We have Copic coloring, ink blending, heat embossing and a slider feature.  If you're new to card-making, a project like this can seem daunting and complicated.  However, like most things, when you break it down into individual steps, it's simple and straight forward.  The sand, wave and sky are simple ink blending.  The sand and wave are die cut.  The wave is heat embossed with glossy clear embossing powder.  The critters, sun and castle are stamped, colored and die cut.  I stamped two of the hippo with the second to color and fussy cut just the watermelon and hand section to pop it up on the finished card.  Now we have all of our components. 
Die cut the slider channel from the wave piece and build the support on the back with foam tape.  Lay the wave and sand over the sky so that the wave peeks up behind the sand while the slider channel remains hidden.   Attach slider discs to the back of the elephants feet and place him in the slider channel.  Insert the elephant and move him back and forth to see how he looks and if you like the placement.  Stamp and heat emboss the sentiment at the top left corner of the sky.  Add foam tape to the back of the sand so that it doesn't interfere with the slider mechanism.  Adhere each critter, sun and castle and the card is complete.

He is Worthy Watercolor with Scrapbooking with M.E. Boutique

Todays project is my second Design Team card for Scrapbooking with M.E. Boutique and it's gorgeous while easy.  I started out by arranging my stamps on a 4.5" x 6" piece of watercolor paper in my MISTI.  You'll want to use a stamp positioner with this project because watercolor paper can be tricky to stamp on with the uneven surface.  I stamped on the smoother side of my paper using Archival ink.  I chose Archival because it's waterproof and a dark black.  It did take several stampings to get each word smoothly even.  Because I stamped it several times, creating several layers of ink, I set it aside to dry for an hour or so before moving on to adding my watercolors. After taping my piece down to a flat surface (I used a small craft cutting board), I wet down the entire piece with a modest amount of water and began to add paint.  I used blues, teal, pink and purple, being careful about the teal and pink mixing too much to avoid mud.  You also want to be careful about adding too much water so that you avoid getting a lot of puddles.  You can sop up any puddles with a paper towel; you don't want to let them dry like that because you can get ugly edges and hidden mud.  It doesn't show in the pictures well, but I also added a shimmer spray over the top when I was done adding color.  This step adds shimmer (obviously) but also helps to blend it a bit as well.  After it was dry, I ran it through my Big Shot with a stitched rectangle die and then trimmed added a 1/8 inch wide strip of Scor-tape to each side. After removing the backing one side at a time, I added black microfine glitter and burnished it into the tape with my finger.  After mounting to a top folding cardbase, the card is complete.  Here is the video tutorial on my YouTube channel and my supply list is below.

Easter Triple Play

Todays post and video are done in a bit of a different style than usual.  I have 3 cards, all of an Easter theme celebrating the resurrection of our Lord Jesus, utilizing experiments.  When I get new products, I like to play with them and experiment so I have a bin in my studio with several random bits.  These cards were created using a few of those panels.  I chose to do it this way because Easter has devolved into chicks, bunnies, toys and candy.  I wanted to convey it's true purpose and true meaning and I hope you enjoy.

Start with a Bristol Smooth panel cut to 4"x 5.25" and tape the stencil down on the corners.  Smooth the lavender Nuvo paste over the top half and the green over the bottom half, blending the two colors in the middle.  Remove stencil while paste is still wet.  Set aside the panel to dry and immediately wash the stencil and palette knife.  The panel will take an hour or so to dry completely, but I let mine sit for several hours.  Once dry, center the cross die in the middle of the panel so that the pattern is even in the die and run it through your die cutting machine.  Give it a few passes; you may have to use your craft knife to help complete the cuts in a few places.  Cut the gold cardstock to 4.25" x 5.5" and adhere to the card base using Scor-tape.  Center the glitter paste panel and center it over the gold.  Apply Stick-It to the back of some gold cardstock and run the Oh Happy Day die with the gold cardstock through the die cutting machine.  Remove the die cut from the rest and remove all the little bits and pieces.  Arrange the die cuts over the glitter panel, remove backing paper and press down.  I started with Day because it was at the bottom and wanted to make sure it didn't hang off the edge of the glitter panel.  The card is complete.

In order listed above, I used the ink blending technique to add color to my panel.  Next, I applied the glimmer paste using the stencil and let that dry.  Once the paste was dry, I ran in through my die cut machine with the largest of the MFT Wonky Stitches dies.  Using vellum with Stick-It on the back, I stamped and heat embossed my images followed by die cutting them.  To finish up, I adhered the colored panel to the cardbase with Scor-Tape and layered the vellum images on the front.  Card completed.

Bronzey Blue Beauty with Distress Oxides and MFT

 This is one of those rare cards that requires little else and is better for it's simplicity and minimalist design.  I can't really claim that as my intention, it just happened that way, but don't tell anybody.  It's our little secret.  Initially, I imagined this as a shaker card, but the blue and bronze were just perfect together and didn't need anything else.  I kept it simple with a small banner, die cut sentiment and a scattering of sequins to finish it off.  If your guy enjoys botany or a flower garden, leave off the sequins and it would be a great guy card too. 

 I layered two shades of Distress Oxide inks to get a faded denim look and used ink-lifting to get the look of bleach spots.  With the regular Distress inks, the spots would look more white, but with the Oxides, they maintain their color and add opacity, but lighter.  Here is the link to the video tutorial on my YouTube channel if you want to see how to recreate this at home and my supply list is below.

Handmade Christmas Series: Card 2 Featuring the 2016 SOA Collection

Hello!  Merry Christmas!  Todays project is a fun design with a contemporary edge that's perfect for masculine cards.  Another way I picture this card is in red, black, and gold, which would also be perfect for masculine cards and would look stellar.  In this card we have a watercolored background with heat embossed white puffy stripes, a two-tone, layered stamped tree, stamped and die cut stag and a die cut sentiment.  I had a lot of fun putting this card together and playing with everything in the 2016 Stamp of Approval holiday collection.  Here is the link to the video tutorial I have on my Youtube channel if you want to see start to finish how you can re-create this card at home.  I encourage you to experiment and use my design as a inspiration to create something unique to you or just copy it, lol.  Everything I used is listed below.

MFT Magical Dragons

 Hey there!  From the moment I saw images and cards done with the Magical Dragons stamp set from My Favorite Things, I couldn't wait to get them home and start to play.  They are so sweet and so versitile, I even have a Christmas card idea with these.  I started with my stamping and used some masking to make the baby dragon sit on a floating smoke cloud, colored in the dragons and smoke with Copics, re-masked my images and used a cloud stencil to create several layers of clouds.  Here is the video tutorial on my YouTube channel to watch step by step how I created the scene and I encourage you to try these techniques too.
