Boo Crew Halloween with Ink Blended Background and Copics

Here is the fifth card in what has become a Halloween series this year.  These guys are from the Plushoween set by Mama Elephant and they aren't just for Halloween.  These guys would make adorable birthday cards too.  You could mask out the face on the pumpkin and turn it into an ornament for Christmas as well.  I colored the guy in the middle as a cat in a bunny costume, but I realized after coloring him that he is supposed to be a fox.  Don't care; still cute! LOL!  At any rate, this was a lot of fun to play with.  I used my cat Pixie as inspiration for the vampire cat and my childhood cat Spunky for the coloring on the would be fox.  The bear I kept simple.  I had a sunset in mind for the background, so I used 3 colors of Distress inks with the ink blending technique; Mermaid Lagoon, Picked Rasperry, and Carved Pumpkin.  When it was dry, I added some Shimmer Spritz.

From Backgrounds to Cards

A few weeks ago, I posted a video on backgrounds using Distress Oxide re-inkers.  Todays post gives you some ideas for using those backgrounds in card projects.  For the top card, I really loved the rainbow effect and wanted it to be the focal point so I kept it simple with a sentiment and a few sequins.  For the bottom card, I used a stencil and some black glitter paste to add some impact while bringing the rainbow colors forward.  To finish it off, I added a die cut and heat embossed sentiment and mounted to a card base with some gold foil paper as a mat to tie in the gold in the die cut.

Here is the video on my YouTube channel demonstrating the background technique and my supply list is below.

Supplies:
Canson XL 140 lb watercolor paper
Distress Oxide Reinkers
  • Picked Raspberry
  • Wild Honey
  • Salty Ocean
  • Twisted Citron
  • Lucky Clover
Imagine Crafts Shimmer Spritz

Top card:
Stitched Rectangle die
Scor-tape
Funny Bones RWD 418 (sentiment)
Pretty Posh 4mm Sparkling Clear sequins
Little Things Ivory sequins

Bottom Card:
DCWV Gold Satin foil paper
Stitched Rectangle die
Concord & 9th Hello die
Wow Turkish Nights embossing powder
Hero Arts Swirl Stencil
Nuvo Black Diamond Glimmer paste

One Layer Watercolor Peony

There's tons of tutorials available with the Distress Oxides and I was curious to see how they worked with the original Distress inks, so I combined Distress Oxide reinkers with original Distress reinker using the ink dipping technique.  I loved the results.  I loved the blend of colors, the textural differences between the ink finishes, the soft watercolor look and the mix of hard and soft edges that are hallmarks of watercolor.  Wanting the watercolor to shine, I kept the rest of the card simple with some flowers and a clean sentiment and mounted to a white cardbase.  Here's the link to the video tutorial on my YouTube channel and my supply list is below.

Supply list:
Distress Oxide reinker
Distress Original reinker
Ellen Hutson Mondo Peony
VersaMark
White embossing powder
Funny Bones stamp # RWD123
Imagine Crafts Shimmer Spritz
Scor-tape
White cardbase
Memento Tuxedo Black

He is Worthy Watercolor with Scrapbooking with M.E. Boutique

Todays project is my second Design Team card for Scrapbooking with M.E. Boutique and it's gorgeous while easy.  I started out by arranging my stamps on a 4.5" x 6" piece of watercolor paper in my MISTI.  You'll want to use a stamp positioner with this project because watercolor paper can be tricky to stamp on with the uneven surface.  I stamped on the smoother side of my paper using Archival ink.  I chose Archival because it's waterproof and a dark black.  It did take several stampings to get each word smoothly even.  Because I stamped it several times, creating several layers of ink, I set it aside to dry for an hour or so before moving on to adding my watercolors. After taping my piece down to a flat surface (I used a small craft cutting board), I wet down the entire piece with a modest amount of water and began to add paint.  I used blues, teal, pink and purple, being careful about the teal and pink mixing too much to avoid mud.  You also want to be careful about adding too much water so that you avoid getting a lot of puddles.  You can sop up any puddles with a paper towel; you don't want to let them dry like that because you can get ugly edges and hidden mud.  It doesn't show in the pictures well, but I also added a shimmer spray over the top when I was done adding color.  This step adds shimmer (obviously) but also helps to blend it a bit as well.  After it was dry, I ran it through my Big Shot with a stitched rectangle die and then trimmed added a 1/8 inch wide strip of Scor-tape to each side. After removing the backing one side at a time, I added black microfine glitter and burnished it into the tape with my finger.  After mounting to a top folding cardbase, the card is complete.  Here is the video tutorial on my YouTube channel and my supply list is below.

Supplies:
Creative Worship Worthy King
Creative Worship Words of Life: Actions
Neat&Tangled Christmas Journaling
Ranger Archival Jet Black ink
Canson XL Watercolor paper
MISTI
Gansai Tambi watercolors
Imagine Crafts Shimmer Spritz
Stitched Rectangle die
Scor-tape: 1/4" and 1/8"
Black Microfine Glitter

Thanks for joining me today!  Don't be afraid or intimidated to get started with watercolors; I know it can be daunting because it looks so easy when other people do it.  This style is a perfect place to start as it's just dabbing on paint and there's no "right" way to do it.  Let me know if you have any questions and I'll see you next time.

Bee Popcard by Art Impression with Copics and Distress Oxides

I'll be honest, this card...I got frustrated with this card and I'm sure we've all been there with projects we just about gave up on.  However, it's so dang cute and I had already put a lot of work and supplies into it, so I kept going.  As much as I love Art Impressions, someone dropped the ball with this set.  They don't provide clear instructions and there are stamps with coordinating dies that I couldn't figure out what they were supposed to be.  But don't let that stop you.  Hopefully, my video will make your bee building a breeze, as I've tried to work out some of the kinks.  The stamps and coordinating dies come together, but you do need a separate template die to build your bee.  Here is the video tutorial on my YouTube channel and my supply list is below.

Supplies:
Art Impressions Bee PopCard set
Art Impressions PopCard template
Bristol Smooth cardstock
Memento Tuxedo Black ink
Distress Oxide inks
Vellum
Black Cardstock
Copic Markers
  • C6, 8, 9 and Y02, 08, 17
Pre-embossed Honeycomb patterned paper
Woodgrain patterned paper
Spectrum Noir Sparkle pen
Imagine Crafts Sparkle Spritz
Little Things Lucky Dip Marigold
Matte Medium
Tombow Mono Multi
Foam square adhesive
Scor-tape

It took a bit of finagling, but I was really pleased with my finished product and I think my little nephews will enjoy it.  Thanks for joining me and I'll catch you later!

Ink Blended Rainbow Hugs with Distress and Concord & 9th

Hello!  As you know, I love bright colors; they make you happy.  Ink blending being one of my favorite techniques; it's one I use often and I love experimenting with new color combos to see what I can create.  Emboss resist, ink blending and die cuts are all employed to create this bright, happy, punchy card.

If you have trouble with ink blending, I have a few tips for you.  The first is to change your cardstock.  I used Neenah 110 lb Solar White for years and I got good results, but it took some work.  I heard some good things about Strathmore Bristol Smooth and once I tried it, I never looked back.  Bristol Smooth is a bit heavier and smoother than Neenah, but Neenah isn't a bad cardstock.  I still use it for sturdy cardbases.  The second tip is to hold your blending tool at an angle so that the entire surface of the tool is not in contact with the cardstock.  Use circular motions and little pressure; more pressure creates more friction making is harder to move the tool around.

Here is the link to the video tutorial on my YouTube channel where I demonstrate how to create this project from start to finish.  My supply list is below.

Supplies:
Concord & 9th Cuddles and Hugs stamp and dies
Bristol Smooth cardstock
Neenah Solar White 110 lb (cardbase)
MISTI
Distress Inks (original)
  • Mermaid Lagoon
  • Squeezed Lemonade
  • Abandoned Coral
  • Wilted Violet
Imagine Crafts Shimmer Spritz
My Favorite Things Wonky Stitches die
Versamark
Wow White embossing powder
Scor-tape
Matte Medium

Summer inspired Mixed Media DT project with Infinity Engraving

Hey there!  Todays project was inspired by summer and my husbands step-mom.  She is such a wonderful, sweet, kind and generous lady.   I have been thinking about what to do for her canvas for quite some time, as her tastes are simple and mellow.  I used her favorite colors as a starting point and her love for gardening as a theme.
Here is the link to the video tutorial on my YouTube channel and the supply list is below.  Feel free to leave any questions in the comment section here or on YouTube and my supply list is below.
Supplies:
8x10 Canvas
Infinity Engraving die cuts
Dylusions Acrylic Paint
  • White Linen
  • Lemon Zest
  • Fresh Lime
  • Cut Grass

Nuvo Embellishment Mousse in Pure Platinum
Imagine Crafts Sheer Shimmer Spritz
Nuvo Glimmer Paste in Moonstone
28 Lilac Lane Embellishment Mixes

  • New Leaf
Mixed Media can be intimidating, but don't let fear stop you from learning, creating and growing.  I don't always have a finished project in mind and my projects don't always turn out the way I imagined.  However, they always come from my heart and that's what's important in the end.  The person receiving or buying the piece finds beauty and meaning in it; that's the key to keep in mind.
See you next time!

Blessed Stars: Ink Blended and Dry Embossed Background

Hello friends!  Todays project has a few techniques that while simple and easy are also eye-catching and dynamic.  Ink blending is such an easy and well known technique, but can be challenging to perfect.  Changing my cardstock to Bristol Smooth (I use Strathmore) was a game changer for me.  Secondly, lightening the pressure I applied made things so much easier.  By keeping your hand light, you're creating less friction between your blending tool and the surface of the paper, allowing for smoother movement and better payoff.  You can use any dye ink, not just Distress, as well as pigment inks.  Delicata brand pigment inks dry faster than any other pigment ink I know of and do not need to be heat set or embossed.  When using pigment inks to ink blend, you're applying a lighter layer, which also allows for faster drying.  I also suggest practice.  No skill gets perfected without practice, so allow yourself to have fun and relax when trying out a new technique.
Here is the link for the video tutorial on my YouTube channel if you are interested in how to re-create this card or learn the techniques and my supply list is below.  This would be a great design for a masculine card if you die cut the blessed from black cardstock and left off the sequins.
Supplies:
Strathmore Bristol Smooth cardstock
WRMK 3D Shatter embossing folder
Delicata Golden Glitz pigment ink
Lawn Fawn Stitched Rectangle die

Emerald Birdsong Canvas

Hey there! Todays project is this stunning canvas.  I was inspired by the changing of seasons and coming of Spring.  One of my favorite sounds is listening to the birds in the morning and using the bird chipboard die cuts from Infinity Engraving, I created my piece.  Here's how it came together!
Supplies:
6"x 8" Canvas
Tim Holtz Melange Tissue Wrap
Prima Soft Matte Gel
Faber-Castell stencils set 301
Imagine Crafts Creative Medium Purple Iridescent
Infinity Engraving bird die cuts
Tsukineko Essentials Glue pad
IndigoBlu Gilding Flakes in Lancaster Rose and Royal Peacock
Gelatos - Spearmint, Lime and Metallic Mint
Distress Paint - Twisted Citron, Cracked Pistachio and Lucky Clover
28 Lilac Lane Embellishment Bottles- Cotton Candy and Fresh Mint
28 Lilac Lane Embellishment Kits - French Quarter and Party On
Little Things sequin mix - Pretty Pansy

In the picture to the left is an assortment of products; I used some, but not all.  I started by tearing off a section of tissue wrap and adhering it to the canvas with matte gel medium.  I use a paintbrush to brush a thin, even layer over a quarter to a third of the canvas at a time and smooth the tissue wrap with my fingers or a bone folder.  I also adhere the wrap over the sides of the canvas as well.  It doesn't take long to dry.  My next step was to add the texture medium with a stencil.

I added dabs of Tombow to the back of the stencil and let it dry.  This creates a temporary stick, making sure the stencil doesn't shift when I add my texture paste.  The Imagine Crafts paste will dry to a pearl finish in one light and shift to purple.  It will take around an hour or so to dry; the thicker it's applied, the longer it will take to dry.  While that dried, I completed my birds.

Add fresh glue from the bottle to the pad.  Tap the glue pad over the surface of the die cut, as if you were inking a stamp.  The entire surface of the die cut should be shiny when it's covered.  Let them sit for 20 minutes for the glue to cure.

After 20 minutes, add the gilding flakes to the die cut and tap to adhere.  You don't need a lot and the flakes are very light.  A lint roller comes in very handy for clean up.

The black piece is a corner of a Ranger RUBit SCRUBit pad.  Using the scrubby side, rub over the surface of the die cut to remove excess flake and carefully over the edges as well.  Carefully funnel excess flake back into it's jar.

The top two birds have Royal Peacock gilding flake and the bottom bird with nest has Lancaster Rose.

After my texture paste was completely dry, I added various shades of green gelatos over the tissue paper and blended them with my finger.  In some areas I added a tiny bit of water to my finger to help create a smoother blend and lighter color.  I also added shades of green distress paint in a few areas and Lucky Clover over the outer edges to bring it together.  I used the same matte medium to adhere the bird die cuts to the canvas.  I added a fair amount to the back with a paintbrush to ensure good adhesion and weighted them down until they were dry (I left it overnight).  Next, I wanted to use something new and a little different than what I usually use on my canvases.  Since I usually use metal elements and paper roses, I didn't want to use those here.  Since the die cuts had a metallic finish, I wanted to keep the focus on them.

So I turned to my new button, beads and sequin mixes by 28 Lilac Lane.  I started by adding larger buttons with matte medium and adding in the smaller buttons, half pearls and sequins to look like leaves and flowers.  In a few other areas, I added medium and pressed beads into it.

Top third.

Bottom right corner.

Here is a shot of the purple shift in the texture paste.

Thanks for stopping by and hanging out with me today! Feel free to ask questions and let me know what you think!

Much love,
Jasmine
